Declaring city gas networks as common carriers may face litigation
The petroleum and natural gas ministry has told the sector regulator that the latter’s proposed regulation on declaring a city gas distribution (CGD) network as a common carrier may lead to litigation as it fails to address the issues raised in previous court cases on the matter.

The price cut is in line with the softening energy prices. The government bi-annually fixes the prices of locally produced natural gas. Two different formulas govern rates paid for gas produced from legacy or old fields and for newer fields lying in difficult-to-tap areas.

GAIL AGM: Co expects natural gas transmission volumes to expand 12%
GAIL expects its natural gas transmission volumes to expand 12% and polymer sales to double this financial year, its chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta has said at the AGM. GAIL also expects the new levelized tariff determined by the regulator for its integrated pipelines to help boost its transmission revenues.

Indian Oil has set a net zero operational emissions target by 2046 and increasing the use of less-emitting gas is a key element of that plan. “Our natural gas consumption strategy is part of the national goal to increase the share of gas in primary energy consumption to 15% by 2030 from the current 6%,” Sukla Mistry, Director (Refineries), told ET.
CNG sales volume grows 51% in 6 months to March
City gas distributors sold 19.4 million metric standard cubic meters a day (mmscmd) of CNG in six months to March 2023, up 51% from October 2020 to March 2021 period, oil ministry data showed. In the same period, the sale of piped natural gas (PNG) meant for cooking at home rose 11% to 2.9 mmscmd.
Govt caps trading margin on resale of gas from deep sea fields
Gas from deepwater or high-pressure, high-temperature fields can be sold at market price subject to a ceiling set by the government every six months. Oil and Natural Gas Corp and the consortium or Reliance Industries and BP operate such fields these days.

Independent panel to address grievances related to auction of domestic natural gas
“The committee shall monitor and review the performance of empanelled agencies periodically and examine complaints or grievances received from a seller or buyer of natural gas against the empanelled agency and submit their recommendation(s), if any, to the competent authority,” DGH said in a notification on its website.

Petronet to sign deal to extend Qatar LNG imports beyond 2028
India’s Petronet LNG is expected to sign a deal to extend its long-term liquefied natural gas imports from Qatar beyond 2028. The deal, which includes a 7.5-million metric ton per year deal with Qatar and a 1 million tpy deal with Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, and GAIL (India) Ltd, is expected to be signed by the end of 2023.
